Intellectual Formation

The academic component of priestly formation is meant to deepen a seminarian's faith and confirm his commitment of service by introducing him to the deep, complex truths of the Catholic faith. Academics are always meant to enhance one's spirituality, not conceal it, and will ultimately provide the seminarian with a working knowledge of the basic teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church. Additionally, academic coursework will foster an awareness of the many religious movements and ideas that are so prevalent in today's society, and will highlight the many parallels between Christian traditions and contemporary culture. Most importantly, the program offers the seminarian a deeper understanding of the nature of ministerial priesthood as it has evolved in the Catholic tradition.

The academic year for seminarians is divided into two semesters: fall and spring. The summer months provide an opportunity for language study (all seminarians must attain competency in Spanish or another approved foreign language), pastoral work, and work experiences that enhance the seminarian's overall formation. Seminarians can earn Master's degrees in both Divinity and Theology.
